User Manual

Eagle Eye Tracker Mobile is an advance tracking application designed to both Tack yourself and others using the same application.  Whether you are using the application for fun or for commercial purposes, you will find the features are easy to use and very powerful.

Installing the Application

After you finish the registration process and download the application, sync your pocket PC phone with Active Sync.  When you are synced, open the file EET.msi.  This will start the installation process.  Follow any instructions on your PC and on your phone.  When the installation is complete, the EET icon will be visible in your program files on your phone.

Starting the Application

Click on the EET icon in your Programs folder.

Settings

Server Settings

This is the most important section in this manual.  If you do this wrong, the application will not connect with the server.  When you registered on Eagle Eye Tracker.com, you were sent an email with your server settings.  These are yours and will not work on any other phone.  Click Settings > Server Settings

  • Enter your ID
  • Enter your password
  • Enter the server IP address
  • Enter the port

once you have done this, your server settings are complete.  Now, click OK.

GPS settings

Click on Settings > GPS Settings.  Your GPS settings will open and you will see the two drop down boxes.  These are for GPS port and GPS Baud rate.  Don't change these yet because the application will search for the GPS automatically.  There is a checkbox you need to check it is call Send Locations.  This is to allow the application to connect to the server.  Put a check in this box.  Also choose the interval you wish to send your location updates.  Now Click the Button labeled Start.  This will start the GPS.  watch the messages below the Button.  These messages will tell you if the application has connected with your GPS.  If you connect you will see a message something like "GPS OK! COM4, 4800"  It may take a few seconds for the GPS to connect.   If you can't connect to the GPS, see our FAQ page for ways to fix this.  once you have GPS connection, click OK.

3D Fix Connected /

You should now be back at the main navigation screen.  The map you should see is a world map and you (small red circle) should be centered somewhere on the map where you physically are located on Earth (This only works on Earth!).  It may take a minute or two but you will connect to the server and you will see the message in the black status bar at the bottom of the screen that says "3D Fix Connected."  This means that you have a 3D gps fix and you are connected to the server.  At this point, you can go online to www.EagleEyeTracker.com, login and see yourself on the map!  It's that easy!

Maps

This is where you have to do a little work.  Its not that hard but you will have to do some downloading or actual map configuration.  The map that you see now is just a simple world line map.  This will not help you locate yourself or your friends when you need details.  Download GPSTools Studio. This software allows you to make maps for yourself of the location you are going to operate in.  Next you need to make yourself familiar with the USGS seamless Map Server.  If you live outside the United States,  you may need to find a source for digital maps or you can make your own.  We will discuss this a little later.  Click on the USGC link above.  You should be at the start page for downloading free maps!  If you are in the USA, click on the little map of North America.  Be prepared, this is a slow website but makes your life so much easier.  You should see a map of the USA.  Go ahead and make a boz around where you are.  That is click and drag a box around your location or the area you intend to use this application.  Keep doing this until you can see the whole area you want to work within.

  • Now is a good time to discuss map size.  I currently run a map that is 18megs in size.  This is a very large map that covers an area of about 15 x 15 miles.  This map, being so large, causes delays in map loading and when I am driving, the map will stall for several seconds and then continue.  So when you choose your map,  make sure you keep this in mind. To combat this, we have two layers, layer1 and layer2. Layer1 is your huge high dtail map and layer2 is your not so detailed smaller map.  However the maps will cover the same area.  The USGS server will allow you to download both of these maps.  We will be downloading 1/24K USGS topoquads and the 1/100K USGS topoquads.  The 24K maps are much more detailed but are very large.  The 100K maps have less detail but are smaller in size.  These maps were actually created from the original paper maps that were scanned and the geo-referenced.  They are very accurate.  The 24K maps give you close up detail.  The 100K maps are a more overview of the area with major terrain features.  You can still get these paper maps from the USGS.

Once you have the area you want to download, look on the left side of the USGS website.  There is a section for Downloads.  There is a button that has a small red box in it and a mouse pointer.  Click this and then Click and drag a box around the area to download.  Once you finished that a window will pop up called "The National Map Seamless Server Request Summary Page.  We are almost done.  The default download is the National Elevation Dataset.  This is not what we are looking for.  We need to add a couple of things to the list.  Click on "Modify Data Request."  This will bring up a whole slew of things you can download but the ones we want are at the top of the list.  put a check next to 100K DRG-UTM Zone XX.  The XX is there because i don't know what zone you are in.  Also, if your were paying attention to the above notes, you will have already put a check next to 24k DRG- UTM Zone XX.  Just a note: Remember what those values that I refer to as XX.To the right of each item you checked, a drop down list is now visible.  Make sure they are both set to GeoTIFF and  ZIP.  Now scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click the button "Save Changes & Return to Summary."  Now, along with the Elevation Dataset, you should see the two items we added.  Click the download button on the 24K map first.  you will see that you are put into a Queue and then eventually it will tell you that the server is extracting the data you requested.  Finally it will say the data extraction in complete and has a link that says "here" to download the file.  Click that link and your download dialog boxed will appear.  Click on the button to save the file to disk and then name the file 24K <your loaction>.zip.  Your location being the area the map covers. Start the Download.  When the download finishes, close that window so you can see the summary page again and click download for the 100K maps.  Do the same thing you did with the 24K map accepts name the 100K maps with 100K<your location>.zip.  Unzip them in an area you can remember.  Now you have both of your maps.

Once you have your maps, it is not hard to create the actual map file the EET Mobile application uses.  Start by opening the GPSTools studio file you downloaded.  Now you are ready to create a map for your Pocket PC phone!

Follow these steps

  1. Click File > New Maplib

  2. Click Map > New Map

  3. Go to the place on your hard drive where you put the maps you downloaded. The file with the extension of ".tif"  is the file we are looking for. It should look something like "85840659.tif" Select that file and click open.

  4. Then next box that appears is the New map settings dialog.  Name this map "layer1".  make sure it is exactly as it appears in quotes.  No caps. Also make sure the Tile size is set for Height: 256 and Width: 256. Click OK

  5. A box will pop up asking if you want to use the worldfile.  Click Yes.

  6. The next box that appears is the Worldfile wizard.  For the country / Region, choose Unaited States.  We concluded you were in the USA above.  Now in the Select Grid dropdown, you should choose UTM(nad27).  This is the default Datum (where 0 is on earth to put it simply) that the USGS topoquads uses.  Now the zone is the XX i asked you to remember above...remember?  Put that value in Zone. Now that we have done this, click Next.  You have now created half of your map file.

  7. Follow steps 2 through 6 again for the 100K map but name this map "layer2" .  Once you have done this go on to Step 8

  8. Click File > Save Maplib .  The save dialog will appear.  Now you can name the file whatever you want.  I name my file the area i am working in for example, "Sierra Vista.Maplib"

Congratulations, you have created a Maplib for your Pocket PC phone to use with Eagle Eye Tracker Mobile.  Now we just need to put it somewhere in your phone.

Go ahead and Sync your phone with your computer using Activesync. Open your active sync Dialog and Click on the Explore button.  This will allow you to look around the file system of your Pocket PC phone.  If you don't have a storage card already, stop right now and go buy a 1 or 2 gig card.  Remember these files can be really large.  You can put the file your My Documents folder if you wish however.  If you have a storage card on your phone, create a folder on the card called "MAPS"

Now click Start > My Computer (on your PC not your phone) and find the Maplib file you created. When you find the Maplib file, drag it into the Pocket PC explorer window into the folder you want it in.

Wow!  You have come along way!  You just need to tell the software what mapfile you want to use.  OK start the EET application if you haven't already. Click Settings > Map File.  You should see the current map file being used and a little button with "..." in it.  Click that button.  Find the file we created and moved into the Pocket PC.  Click on that file.  Once you have done that, click OK.  It may take a minute to load depending on how huge your file is.  When it is done loading, exit the application by clicking Settings > Exit.  Restart the application.  You will now see the new map we created!

Good job!

Screen Settings

This section will save your battery.  If  you plan to use this alot, you will want to set this to turn off your screen every so many seconds that you choose.  The EET application makes sure your Pocket PC phone does not turn off.  If it did, the position updates would stop with it.  Therefore we put a function to turn off the screen in order to save batteries.

Rotate Screen

If you are handy with a needle and thread, you may want to mount this on your wrist or something.  This feature rotates the screen and keeps it there for that kind of use.

Proximity Alarm

If you are navigating somewhere in navagation mode (see below), this setting will alert you that you are close to where you want to be with a little message.

Emergency Button Setup

This is important so don't skip this section.  The emergency button, by default, sends and emergency message to any friends you can track.  So anybody that is in your friends list and are logged in will get this message.  In addition, you can set the emergency button to dial the phone.  You can either specify a number or you can check the dial 911 checkbox and when you press the Emergency button, the phone will automatically dial 911 for you.  Be careful with this setting.

Options

Update locations

update locations sends your current location on command.  You may have set your send location interval to 5 minutes.  this allows to to send your location immediately.

Locate on GPS

This basically centers the map on your location.  If you are locating a buddy on your map, this setting will be turned off.  To stop locating on a friend, click this.  A check mark next to the item will tell you if you are locating on GPS or not.

Stop Navigation

if you are in navigation mode, this will take you out of navigation mode.

Send Navagation Order

This is one of the really cool features of the EET Mobile Application.  With this feature you can tell one of your friends where to go.  Click Send Navigation order.  Then for this example, Click "Click on Map".  Now you can click on your map to send sombody to that location.  So click on the map somewhere.  Now a dialog box appears that has the Latitude and Longitude of the location you clicked.  Now you can add a message and click the dropdown box and choose a friend to send this to.  Now your friend's Pocket PC running EET Mobile will go into Navigation mode and he will also get the message.

Send Message

With this function you can send a text message to one of your friends.  Click "Send Message".  Write your message and choose your friend.  Click send message.  If your friend is logged in he/she will receive this message.

Navigate

Navigate is the core feature of GPS navigation.  Click on "Navigate".  Now you can choose from Coordinates, Click on Map, or Waypoint List.  Coordinates allows you to enter latitude and longitude coordinates manually.  it also allows you so save this location in your waypoints if you desire.    Click on  map will allow you to choose a point on the map to navigate to.  As with the coordinate option, you have the choice to save this location as a waypoint.  Waypoint list is your saved locations.  You can choose a previously saved location to navigate to.  Choose any one of these, and when you are finished with the dialog boxes, click OK.  you will go into navagation mode.  You will see a compass dial and distance and direction text.

  • Little note on navigating.  A GPS knows what direction you are going by referencing your current location with your last location.  If you are in navagation mode and you are lazily walking, you last location will not be very far from your current location.  In fact it will be so close that the math necesary to calculate your direction creates some really really small numbers.  Also GPS tend to wander around in a 50 foot circle.  So with your GPS is wandering by itself and you are barely moving, you will get a really bouncy compass needle. Move with a purpose and you will get some good directions. Oh yeah!  If the compass needle is pointing straight up,  you are going in the right direction.  If it is pointing off to the right, you need to turn right.  In essence, the needle is pointing the direction you need to go.   ghkjgjh

Locate

This is the coolest part of the EET Mobile Application.  Up till now you have been tracking yourself.  Locate allows you to track your friends.  Click Locate > Friend.  Now select your friend from the drop down list and click OK.  Your map will now center on your friend!  Your friends will always show on your map if they are within your viewing window.

Add Waypoint

Add waypoint allows you to manually enter a Latitude , Longitude, Name and Description of your new waypoint that will be saved in your Pocket PC phone.

Mark Location

Mark location allows you to save your current location as a waypoint.

Average Location

As we talked about above, your GPS will wander around inside a 50 foot circle all the time.  Why?  Off the shelf consumer GPSs have limited accuracy.  High end $10,000 GPSs get the centemeter accuracy.  So to offset this,  we can average the locations.  What does that mean?  We take every position sent from the gps and add all the latitudes we receive and divde that by the number of latitudes we received.  We do this with the longitudes as well.  This gives us a  more accurate position of time. When you navigate to a location, it puts a little blue box at the location you need to be at.  Clear map erases that box.

Map

The map screen displays your location and the location of your friends.  The "IN" and "OUT" buttons zoom your map in and out.
